Photos by Kylee Richardson SAGINAW — The Lapeer varsity football team will continue its trek through the season as it faces off against Saginaw Heritage on Friday at Heritage. The Lightning are continuing to pick up momentum each week after turning the season around in Week Two with a big 41-0 win against Flint and a Week Three 56-7 win against Bay City Western.

Heritage is sitting at a 1-2 record with its only win coming against Saginaw in its season opener, but it lost a close 37-34 match up against Flint Powers in Week Two that went to two overtime periods. Lapeer beat Heritage 48-13 last season.

“It appears they’re a little stronger than they were a year ago,” said Lapeer coach Mike Smith. “We have to go up there and play and they are going to pose a lot stronger competition. We just got to get prepared and get a little bit better and give our best.”Quarterback Brady Apple takes a shot down field against Bay City Western Friday.Quarterback Brady Apple takes a shot down field against Bay City Western Friday.

As the Lightning as a whole are blowing through opponents, players like Jalen Kirkland are continuing to put up bigger numbers each week. Kirkland had 16 carries for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Brady Apple was 9-of-16 for 120 yards passing, threw two touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown. Drew Johnston and Issa Smith also dominated the receiving game, both catching a combined eight passes for 110 yards.

“I told the guys that the competition is going to get tougher, we got to keep building for that,” Smith added. “We haven’t looked at Heritage yet, I just know they have some really good athletes and some speed on their team.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Saginaw Heritage on Friday.
